"Now That I’m Pregnant,
What Bra Size Do I Buy?"

For a proper fit, the best time to buy a bra is at the time that you require it.  When you are unable to do so, we suggest using these standard guidelines:

During pregnancy
Based on your pre-pregnant bra size, your breasts will increase one size in the band and one to two sizes in the cup.

Two to four days after birth
When your milk comes in
--two to four days after birth--your breasts will increase another cup size or more; and your rib cage will start returning to its pre-pregnant size.

After 2 1/2 to 3 months of nursing
Your breasts will start to decrease in size.

Sizing Yourself for a Bra

For comfort and support, a good fitting bra is essential. The best way to get a good fit is by trying on. When it is not possible to try on before you buy, use the method below to determine your bra size.

Determining Band Size

1. Using a measuring tape in inches, measure around your rib cage, underneath your breasts. Take the measurement. This is your band size;

2. Measure around the top of your breasts, under your arms (do not include any of the breast tissue in the measurement). Take the measurement;

 3. Average the two measurements taken in #1 and #2 (add #1 and #2 together and divide by 2). Note this number because you will need it to determine your cup size.

Determining Cup Size

4. Measure around your body at the fullest part of the bust wearing a good fitting bra (or the best you’ve got!);

5. Subtract your band size from your bust measurement and use the following chart to determine your cup size:

1" - 2"

2" - 3"

3" - 4"

Note: No sizing method is foolproof. Also, keep in mind that one style of bra is likely to be sized differently than another style. The only way to determine the size and style of bra for you is by trying on, and ideally, with the assistance of a bra-fitting professional.

Fitting yourself for a Bravado Original bra: To check for proper band size, raise your arms above your head. As you are doing so, the band should not move. If it slips, the band is too big. If it feels tight, the band may be too small.

Choosing Nursing Top Size

As a general rule, base your nursing top size on your shoulder width. Ask yourself: Relative to other women, am I XS, S, M, L or XL in shoulder width?

Your response should equal your nursing top size, unless:

  1. your chest size, according to you, is more than one size larger than your nursing top size. In this case, you may want to order a size larger than your nursing top size; or

  2. (for dresses) your hips, according to you, are more than two sizes larger than your nursing top size. In this case, you may want to order one size larger than your nursing top size.

Determine sling size based on the primary caregiver. If there are two caregivers, see the combination-size details below.

Combination-size slings are available to fit two caregivers who, using the above chart, are one sling-size apart. For example, a long-regular combination is made to fit a person who would fit a Regular and a person who would fit a Large. The combined sizes can only be one size apart and are: Regular-Petite, Long-Regular and Extralong-Long.

If the caregivers using the sling are more than one size apart, we recommend either two slings (one for each size) OR one sling in the size to fit the person who will use the sling most.

To make a combination-size sling, we take the largest size of the two sizes ordered and shorten the side rails. This allows the larger partner appropriate sling length and the smaller partner the ability to tighten the sling adequately. The drawback is that the larger partner may miss some of the siderail padding, particularly when using the cradle position.

For twins, we recommend a sling fitted to each caregiver, in other words, no combination-size sling. Generally, depending on their size, twins can be carried together in one sling for the first 12 weeks. If you plan on wearing both twins in one sling and are in the upper half of your size category, we suggest going with the next size up. For example, if you are 5' 10" and and 165 lb, you would be most comfortable wearing your twins in a Long sling.

Still unsure what size to order? Telephone us or send an email describing your height and weight and we will help you choose the best size.

*Extra Petite: If you would describe yourself as an extra small person above the waist, then you may qualify for an Extra-Petite sling. For example, a person of 5'2" and 115 lb would, according to the Heart to Heart Sling Sizing Guide, take a Petite sling, but if that person wears size XS tops, carrying much of his/her weight below the waist, then an Extra-Petite sling would be a better fit.
