Your Sling or Wrap Can Become
Indispensable
All
over South America, Asia and Africa, communities of babies are
touted about daily in slings and wraps. They, in turn, carry the next generation. A baby
in a sling or wrap on these continents is as normal and daily a sight as a baby
in a stroller in North America.
In
North America, we know slings and wraps are a wonderful way to carry a child, but
because we haven't grown up seeing them in use regularly, we often don’t
know how to use them.
As
a sling or wrap owner, therefore, expect
there to be a learning curve. Then, follow the three
“P’s”, below, and your sling or wrap may very well become an indispensable tool for
carrying, soothing and getting close to your child.
1.
Patience (don’t be hard on yourself).
2. Practice.
3. Peer guidance (find people in your community using a sling, and ask
for their assistance).
At
Bosom Buddies, we believe so strongly in the value of slings and
wraps, we welcome all
questions relating to their use. Contact us by email
or telephone.

Heart
to Heart Baby Slings:
Original and Compact $69.95
Two of the best designed slings on the market. Why?
- Hands free in many instances
- Baby's legs are kept
together at the stage when the pelvis is developing
- The top and bottom edges
(called "side rails" and made of non-allergenic high-density
batting) are padded for baby's comfort, protection and head
support
- For parent's comfort: The
Heart to Heart sling distributes the baby's weight across the shoulders
and back; The rings rest on a shoulder pad, so they don't grate on parent's shoulder
-
Nylon rings hold the tail securely in place and allow easy
adjustability
-
Top and bottom edges tighten
independently, for a custom fit, essential for supporting baby's head and spine
and allowing you to snuggle your baby in close to your centre of gravity,
making your baby feel up to 25% lighter
- Double-stitched seams of
triple-ply industrial core thread; rings reinforced by six rows of
stitching
- Easy to put on and take
off: Sleeping baby can be moved to bed or car seat without waking
Heart to Heart slings come in two styles: Original and Compact. The
Original has been on the market since 1989, the Compact since 2007. We at Bosom
Buddies have always loved the Original and are excited to get feedback on the
Compact. The differences between the two are shown in the table below.

* The Original
hammock accommodates up to 30-lb toddlers and is ideal for concealing
nursing and/or sleeping little ones. The Compact hammock, too, works for
carrying and nursing up to a 30-lb toddler, but while you can conceal a
nursing baby using the Compact, you may not be able to completely conceal
a 3-year-old toddler (which would be ideal when you find yourselves in a
cold Saskatchewan wind storm or under a rainy British Columbia sky); The
Compact sling is made more for babies and young toddlers than for older
toddlers.
** The Compact shoulder pad is the same width as the Original's, but
thinner (half the padding of the Original).
The main difference between the two styles of sling is their
sleekness--The Compact is lighter and slightly smaller than the Original, which increases
portability (easier perhaps to wear under a coat or to transport when not in use), but because
of a smaller hammock, reduces usability with an older toddler. The pocket
is a definite asset in the Compact; as for the heart sewn onto the
shoulder pad, well, that's personal preference--neither I nor my husband
ever minded the heart and in fact, I always feel a bit of camaraderie when
I see others wearing a sling with a heart on their shoulder.
Heart to Heart slings come in several
sizes, including combination-sized slings, made for multiple
caregivers of different sizes.

The Heart
to Heart Baby Slings are made
in Canada. Instruction guide and DVD accompany each sling.
Most fabrics are 100% cotton (the blue chambray is mostly cotton with a
small percentage of polyester). Because it may take several
washes for the sling material to become soft enough to pull easily through
the rings, we suggest washing your sling before use. Machine wash, hang to dry;
do not use Ivory Snow because it may leave residue on the sling.
"I
am definitely keeping my Heart to Heart [Original] sling! I used a different one with
my first child, but the Heart to Heart is so much more comfortable, and
easier to adjust. And I love that the top and bottom can adjust separately
so you can position the baby any way you like."
Jennifer B., Sackville NS, Aug 2002
"I
nursed my daughter in
the sling today while wearing my nursing top. It was great not having to
tug my shirt up from beneath the sling while trying to hide my belly at
the same time. Thank you so much for all the time you spent with me."
Kyah R., Maple Ridge BC,
May 2002
"We
used a Heart to Heart [Original] sling with Kate, our first daughter. For my
husband, the sling became indispensable (a disability makes it difficult
for him to hold a baby). It also proved to be a wonderful way of
soothing Kate, right into toddlerhood. Three children later, we know
the Heart to Heart sling is worth every penny and is our favourite baby
item."
Sarah S., Black Creek BC, July 2001
